A Swinging Night In Charlotte
On a sweltering night in downtown Charlotte, North Carolina, I heard something unexpected and extraordinarily beautiful from a youth band of brass players, playing, in harmony, a really tight and subtle version of John Blackburn and Karl Suessdorf's "Moonlight in Vermont." They were all sweating profusely and working hard, really concentrating, as they hammered out one song after the other--each one better than the previous. The dynamics were very impressive and everyone played in tune. Their energy was electric.
